Even some of the most frequent travelers miss out on a very lucrative point earning option with hotel loyalty programs. Unlike airlines, hotels regularly run bonus point promotions to compete with other hotel chains for business. The “big four” chains – Hilton, Hyatt, Marriott and Starwood – run promotions regularly, and you can earn free nights or up to quadruple points, depending on the specific chain and promotion. These points are over and above what you would normally earn for staying at the hotel.
Hilton’s HHonors program has a particularly nice promotion running this summer, from July 9 to September 30, called Triple Your Trip. Members can earn triple points on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, and double points on other nights.
These bonus points don’t count toward hotel elite status, but they will help you supercharge your balance to redeem that reward stay in Bali or Paris. Here are a few important things to note in order to take advantage of hotel bonus point promotions:
- Make sure you register for Triple Your Trip (or other hotel promotions). Registration in the promotion is easy, but is always required.
- Hilton’s HHonors program lets you earn both miles and hotel points, but in other programs you’ll need to be earning hotel points – not airline miles – to take advantage of these promotions.
- Promotions usually run for a few months, are new ones are announced three to four times per year.
- With the Hilton, Hyatt and Marriott programs you will often receive better value from redeeming points for hotel nights than transferring points to airline programs.
