In a move about as surprising as airline mergers leading to higher fares, United has announced a major change to its frequent flyer program.  It has essentially copied Delta’s move, announced earlier this year, where travelers will earn miles not based on how far they fly, but rather how much they spend.  This new way of earning miles begins March 1, 2015. Alaska Airlines and Delta Air Lines are downshifting their partnership.

In terms of the medium and large frequent flyer programs, Alaska Airlines has one of the best ones out there.  It’s been a refuge for mileage junkies like me who have watched in dismay this year as United and Delta announced radical changes to their programs, greatly devaluing each in turn. Earthquakes are getting more common in the frequent flyer world.  As recently as a few years ago, all we had to worry about were occasional benefit changes and small increases to the amount of miles needed to redeem for tickets.

And to think we used to complain back then!
