The old saying, “Change is the only constant” seems to have been invented to describe frequent flyer programs. While airlines like to refer to these changes as program “enhancements” the reality is that very few of their changes are beneficial to consumers. While I’m a dedicated AA flyer (Executive Platinum who has nearly requalified before mid-year) I’m disappointed to report that AA is following the path of program devaluation blazed by Delta and United. You know me – I’m all about getting the most value possible when redeeming frequent flyer miles. And when I say “value” I mean both the key metric, cents per mile, but also having an amazing travel experience. One of the most important aspects of frequent flyer miles is that they enable average travelers to have extraordinary experiences, ones they wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford. Dear American Airlines:

You were the first airline to introduce a frequent flyer program, in 1981.  As the innovator in this area, customer loyalty is something you understand better than most other airlines.  Your program has been (and remains) among the best available in terms of rewarding loyal frequent flyers for their business.  Personally I miss having Executive Platinum status – no other airline has made me feel as valued and appreciated as AA.
